💡 10 facts about Sofia
1. Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Europe.

2. Sofia is the largest city of the Balkan Peninsula. The rich history of the city could not but leave numerous reminders of itself. Sofia amazes with the number and beauty of architectural and historical monuments.

3. Much of Sofia's charm is the picturesque scenery of the area in the midst of which it is situated. Sofia is located in the west of Bulgaria on the southern edge of the basin of the same name. The Sofia Basin is surrounded by forested mountains, and the city itself is located half a kilometre above sea level.

4. Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is believed that the future capital of Bulgaria was founded about 2500 years ago. In the 1st century AD the Roman settlement of Serdica was founded here, which was the centre of the province of Thrace during the late Antiquity.

5.Interestingly, Serdica was one of the favourite cities of Emperor Constantine, who called it "his Rome". Constantine seriously planned to make the city the new capital of the Roman Empire, but eventually chose the city of Byzantium (future Constantinople, now Istanbul) because of its more favourable strategic position.

6.Sofia is a place with a rich and ancient history, with each landmark reflecting the complex past of the entire state: ancient churches turned into mosques, monumental socialist architecture and Roman heritage intertwined with the modern city.
7. Sofia is now a dynamic European capital, whose trademark is its beautiful landscapes and unique architectural combinations, as well as many beautiful sacral monuments.

8. Sofia has a humid continental climate characterised by warm summers and cool winters. In summer it is quite hot here, however, this heat is not exhausting, because the mountains surrounding the city give it a saving coolness. Winter is short and mild, with unstable snow cover and quite frequent thaws, although snowfall is sometimes considerable.

9. The city is located at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains. The historical centre lies at an altitude of 553 metres above sea level. There is an opinion that Sofia appeared in this very place only because of its mineral springs, which are still quite numerous here today.

10.How many springs there were on the territory of Sofia 1000 or 2000 years ago - now it is impossible to establish. As it turned out, even the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great said - "Serdika is my Rome" and actually ruled the Roman Empire from here.
