Donald Trump vows Gulf of Mexico name change to Gulf of America

Donald Trump vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America as he said his incoming administration would embrace a “golden age of common sense”.

The president-elect, 78, held a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Tuesday to announce a $20 billion investment in US data centres and reaffirm his promise to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

“We’ll impose new tariffs so that the products in our stores will once again be stamped with those beautiful words: ‘Made in the USA’,” he said. “We are not treated well by Canada. Same thing with Mexico. We’re going to be announcing a future date, pretty soon … we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. It’s appropriate.”

Trump, who will return to the White House on January 20, promised to scrap a ban on offshore oil and gas drilling imposed by President Biden on Monday. “Banning offshore drilling will not stand. I will reverse it immediately,” Trump said. “I will revoke offshore oil, gas drilling bans in vast areas on day one.”
