“Please join in large numbers to defeat anti-national, secessionist-rapist, communist cartel” read bulk text messages to Jawaharlal Nehru University students, sent by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The campaign for this year’s students’ union elections has been like no other on campus. The right-wing ABVP has gained ground and the All India Students Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India have joined hands to form a formidable Left alliance. The events on and following 9 February have naturally coloured the politics on campus.
An accusation hurled by the Left panel this year is that the JNU administration has provided free access to students’ database to the ABVP, for the latter to carry out their campaigning through text messages. The ABVP claims that this is a move by them to be eco-friendly and cut down the use of paper in their campaign. They insist that they acquired the numbers of students by building their own database through registrations for debates and events the party has organised.
With the ongoing debate on “nationalism” in the country, largely triggered by events on the JNU campus, the JNUSU elections 2016 is one to watch out for.
