Landsknecht Emporium Kriegsmesser (M5a++) With Scabbard and Byknives Review

Описание к видео Landsknecht Emporium Kriegsmesser (M5a++) With Scabbard and Byknives Review

This is a Landsknecht Emporium Kriegsmesser (M5a++) With Scabbard and Byknives. It is also a left handed version that has been elongated slightly.

A few quick notes about the video -
As I use the blade and demonstrate the drawing motion, I use the blade like a katana and put it on the wrong side. The sound made is similar on the left or right side. I liked it more on my left hip than right hip and did not mind drawing it from that position. Not including some video with it on the right hip (as designed) was an oversight on my part.

The customization on this blade is supposed to be the left handed variant as well as a longer blade. Other changes may have been made to suit the longer blade.

The tip is not in line with the wrist and thirsting is a little odd. However the curved tip offers some interesting perks when half swording or cutting with the assistance of your off hand on the spine of the blade. It may also have some impacts in fencing revenuers. I did not want to do any sword on sword contact but this would have been helpful to see.

Description on the website:

The turning point of the 15th and 16th centuries brought along the largest single-edged weapons with a knifelike construction, the Kriegsmesser, "war knife". Most originals are below the 1300mm overall size, even if some illustrations might show larger pieces as well. Most of the originals have M5b, M5a or M3d blades with various degrees of curvature, while some are completely straight, occasionally with somewhat long-ish false edges. With the Ruggers and Bauernwehrs being analogous to daggers and proper Messers to arming swords, it's clear that these huge knives were created to compete with longswords (Wittenweller equates them the same way).
For a long time we wanted to create something that's directly connected to Landsknechts, so our version is based on "Fencing Landesknechte" by Hans Baldung Grien from 1516, with the handling approximately based on a surviving original with a straight blade.
Additional Notes:
It takes three people about a week to finish one of these blades and scabbard. In the case of a customized one, like Ian's, this can be more due to the extra time spent on altering the design.

The cross is slid down along the blade, and is indeed locked by friction quite firmly (getting it past the last few inches usually takes a brass hammer), and then secured by the Nagel.

The grip is made from beech slabs, surrounding the hidden tang, and is secured by glue and wooden pins, as clearly seen on some originals. There are several more where we can't see what's under the leather, and again, some where the hilt lost all organic components and any rivets/pins that were present.
