Today we take you to meet award-winning Hakka singer Huang Zi-xuan. Over his 12-year career, he’s dedicated himself to telling stories about Hakka culture and has experimented with various genres. Earlier this month he released his first album. Our very own Stephany Yang met up with Huang to find out more.

Wearing a yellow suit, Huang Zi-xuan performs a song from his new album that’s being launched at a press event. This song was inspired by Hong Kong tea culture.

To produce his new album, Huang invited young music producers to get involved, including The Crane, an award-winning musician.

The themes we often wrote about when producing Hakka music were things from the past, such as hometowns or rivers. However, I want to write about Hong Kong in the Hakka language. I also hope that my music can bring a new twist to Hakka music.

When I heard Zi-xuan’s demo, I thought wow, the lyrics and music are well written. I was moved.

Huang’s improvised soul vocals are inspired by folk songs and rhythm and blues. He is also known for combining traditional folk songs, rock and Eastern and Western instruments. His new album combines neo soul, R&B, lo-fi, bossa nova, electronic folk and other genres, breaking away from his previous style.

This album contains a lot of things like R&B, soul or reggae. I need to make some adjustments to the feel and the way I sing. I hope to use an old style that belongs to Hakka, evolve it, and put a modern twist on it.

Huang is a two-time Golden Melody Award winner. With the release of his first album, Huang hopes to explore traditional and contemporary Hakka neo-soul music.
