Dedimunda Deviyo is the God worshiped by the Sinhalese Buddhists in Sri Lanka. He is considered the deity guardian of the Sāsana of the Buddha in the country. People believe that he has the power to heal the deadly disease, epidemic, eradicate the evil of possession and hope giving children to married women. Dedimunda Deviyo identificireba different names across the country. Alutnuvara dev Bandāra, Menik Bandāra, Ūve Bandāra, Aluthnuwara Deviyo and Kirti Bandāra are some of the names that are used. The British scholar Hugh Nevill 1847-1897 describes Dedimunda in different names such as Devata Bandara, Veera Vikum, Yahala Bandara and Yahal Deviyo.
There are various stories and legends about Dedimunda deity. According to one story, the deity Dadimunda was born in mountain home Talagiri devil Pūrnaka called Yaksa and Naga Queen Erandathi. It is also said to be a grandson Vesamuni. Because of his ancestry, he, like Yaksa and well-being of the clans. He said Dedimunda deity first landed in the area Devinuvara Dondra in southern Sri Lanka from South India.
