Ecumenism for Adventists, Part 2: What Activities Can We Do With Other Christians?

In our last class with Dr. Fortin on ecumenism, he led us in exploring some basic questions that undergird Adventist fears of ecumenism, including preliminary points/questions that should be addressed before deciding anything about ecumenism for Adventists. These included:

• The meaning of salvation in Jesus.
• What is the Church?
• What is Babylon?

In this class, we look more closely at the kinds of relationships we have had and can have with other churches. Can we engage along with other churches in inter-church activities, community action, dialogues, relief activities? Can we cooperate in community worship services? Can our pastors join local pastors’ associations? How about cooperating with larger ecumenical organizations, such as the World or National Council of Churches?

Denis Fortin (Ph.D.) is professor of historical theology at Andrews University and has taught courses on the ecumenical movement for 25 years. He has been involved in many interchurch dialogues for the Seventh-day Adventist Church and has served on the Commission on Faith and Order of the National Council of Churches in the U.S.A. (1999-2013).
