How to identify Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)



This is Cosmos, a half-hardy annual that blooms from mid-summer to mid-fall. It has an upright growth habit and is around 2 feet tall.



The stems are thin and branched sometimes with fine rough hairs. The stems can be green to a purple green color.


The leaves are pinnate or bi-pinnate and are arranged in opposite pairs. They are almost sessile and have threadlike segments. The tips of the leave are pointed and fairly hard. The color is a medium green.


The flower yellow disk flowers. The Ray flowers are red, pink, violet or white in color with 8 petals.


Cosmos likes full sun with well drained most soils. It can tolerate low fertility.
