The nights at the Pokémon Academy were supposed to be peaceful.

Everyone said so.
The teachers, the older students, even the bulletin board near the courtyard proudly hung a flyer that read:
“Quiet Hours Begin at 10 — Please Respect Your Fellow Pokémon’s Rest!”
But quiet didn’t always mean calm.
Not for me.

My paw pads echoed softly against the smooth tile floor as I wandered the dorm corridors, trying to settle my nerves after waking up from the first nightmare. The moonlight painted long, silver shapes on the walls, turning the academy hallways into quiet rivers of light. I followed them out of habit, counting each patch of glow like stepping stones.

I wasn’t the only one awake, apparently.

Two little Pichu were curled up together by a vending machine at the end of the hall.
Both fast asleep.
The machine hummed softly behind them, an empty Oran Berry Chips wrapper stuck halfway in the slot like some late-night robbery gone wrong. They must’ve snuck out for snacks and drifted off mid-heist.
Typical first-years.

Farther down, I passed a study lounge door left cracked open.
A warm scent spilled out—Oran berry tea, steeped too long and forgotten on a wooden table.
Someone must’ve dozed off during cram session rotations.
The teachers kept warning us about “exam-season burnout,” but most of us understood: studying was just another type of evolution pressure here.

The academy was always alive, even at night.
Not noisy—just… breathing.
Lights left on by accident.
Rustling leaves in the courtyard garden where the Grass-types liked to practice moves under the stars.
The faint buzz of Rotom-powered bulletin screens displaying tomorrow’s schedule:
Breakfast at 7.
Type Synergy class at 10.
Battle Theory review at noon.
Dorm cleaning inspection sometime after that.

There were always Pokésteps echoing somewhere.
A wandering Meowth returning past curfew.
A restless Ralts drifting after a dream.
Occasionally even a snoring Snorlax blocking an entire stairwell, forcing half the floor to tiptoe through the courtyard instead.

But tonight…
the hall felt heavier.
Like my nightmare was following me through the shadows, clinging to my fur.
I didn’t want to go back to bed.
Didn’t want to close my eyes again.
Didn’t want to see—

…No.
Don’t think about it.
Not yet.

I padded quietly back toward my dorm room—our room.
Mine and Sylveon’s.
The academy paired students for “emotional compatibility,” according to a poster near the dorm office.
I still had no idea what that meant, but the moment they assigned me to share with him, everyone else nodded like it made perfect sense.

Sylveon wasn’t like the others.
He carried himself with this effortless grace—
never rushed, never loud, always knowing exactly where to place a ribbon, a word, or a teasing smile.
Half the students whispered that he belonged in the advanced classes already.
The other half swore he turned down promotions on purpose, like he liked being mysterious.

Me?
I just thought he was… comforting.
Too comforting, sometimes.
Like he could see right through me.

When I reached our door, the room was still dark.
Moonlight brushed across his bed, catching the faint pink glow of his feelers curled loosely around him.
He looked peaceful.
Untouchable.
A little smug, even in sleep.

I hesitated.
My paw hovered over the edge of his blanket.
What if I woke him for nothing?
What if the nightmare wasn’t worth bothering him over?
What if—

My breath hitched.
My chest tightened.
The dream surged back in a flash—shadows too close, voices too soft, a feeling like falling without ever hitting the ground.

Before I even realized it, a small whimper escaped me.

Sylveon stirred instantly.

His feelers lifted first—like they sensed my fear before he did.
Then his eyes opened, bright even in the dark, and his voice reached me before my paws could run or my breath could break again.

And just like that—
the night changed.
