While celebrated by Hindus in Bihar, this festival is also celebrated by followers of other religions including Islam . Gradually, this festival has become popular among the NRIs as well as all over the world. Chhath Puja is dedicated to the Sun, Nature, Water, Air and their sister Chhathi Maiya to thank them for restoring the deities of life on earth. Chhathi Maiya , also called Ranbe Mai in Mithila , Sabita Mai in Bhojpuri and Ranbe Thakur in Bengali . Chhathi Maiya, the sixth form of Parvati , sister of Lord Sun , is worshipped as the deity of the festival. Chhath is celebrated six days after Kali Puja on the sixth day of the moon. During Chhath in Mithila , Maithil women wear pure cotton dhoti without stitching to reflect the pure traditional culture of Mithila .
The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. These include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (vrata), standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prasad (prayer offerings) and arghya. The main worshippers called parvaatin (from Sanskrit parva, meaning 'occasion' or 'festival') are usually women. However, a large number of men also observe the festival as Chhath is not a gender-specific festival. The fast of Chhath Mahaparva is observed by men and women, old and young. Some devotees also perform a prostration march as they head for the river banks.
