Convicted, from 1950, was an entertaining crime/prison movie starring the legendary Glen Ford, Broderick Crawford and Dorothy Malone. It was directed by Henry Levin, based on a 1929 play by Pulitzer Prize winner Martin Flavin. It's a great film with a number of excellent actors here.

Film opens up with two detectives, who seem to enjoy friendly bickering about things like sports and the weather, being called to a club where a murder just took place. They talk to Joe Hufford (actor Glen Ford) who is there on a date with Bertie (actress Martha Stewart, who I recently caught in the film "In a lonely place" with Humphrey Bogart). The detectives bring them downtown, and Bertie is brought in first to speak to the DA, a very hard-edged DA George Knowland (played amazingly by big tough guy Broderick Crawford. I mean, he's old school tough, lighting a match on the sole of his shoe!) "I want a lawyer!" she demands, and he casually says, "I'm a lawyer. What can I do for you?" Great stuff.

Bertie gives her story, and next the DA speaks with Joe, and he explains to Joe that the guy he fought with died from the head injury. Joe seems remorseful, not intending for him to get killed. Knowland seems to be sympathetic and encourages Joe to do his best to get a good attorney. After Joe leaves, Knowland meets with attorney Vernon Bradley - actor Roland Winters. He's starred as Charlie Chan in a number of films I have yet to explore, but I plan to eventually. He plays the corporation lawyer sent by his employer to represent Joe. Knowland can tell that Bradley is inexperienced and gives him suggestions of how to handle the case, and even suggests other attorneys, but Bradley is going to do it his own way and leaves. Knowland thinks the guy is just a stuffed suit, and confides this to his assistant Eddie (briefly in the film played by Frank Cady, character actor from Green Acres and Petticoat Junction fame).
