The simple meaning of the word Upanishad is - 'to sit near'. The disciple should sit near the guru for the attainment of Brahma Vidya. This 'Aksharbrahm' or the holy name pervades all and is situated in the heart of every living being. It is divine light. It is subtler than atoms and even the smallest living beings. Everything reside in it. It is the imperishable Brahman, the basis of life, the essence of speech and the goal of mental cultivation. This holy name is nectar-like and the giver of supreme bliss. To achieve or experience this, is the goal of human life.
According to the scriptures, this body is like a bow and the mind is the arrow. It is with this arrow that the target is attained. The goal to be penetrated is Brahman. It should be done with full concentration.
This name is very secret and holy. For the propagation of this name, great men come to this earth from time to time and show the path of salvation by giving knowledge of Brahma Vidya to human beings.
Just like concentration is necessary in every aspect of life whether driving a car or shooting a gun, similarly concentration of mind is also very important for attaining God.
