February 21, 2023 presentation by Andrea Kawabata of UH-CTAHR on CLR management for organic farms or those using contact, preventative fungicides only. The presentation focuses on the use of certified organic pesticides; however, conventional farms also have the option of combining the use of organic and non-organic pesticides when combatting pests and diseases. Some statistics of Hawaii farming, USDA organic certification, and organic pesticide information will be provided. The presentation will also discuss coffee leaf rust in Hawaii and the effects that weather, climate, and epidemiology of the pathogen have on its management. A section discusses organic and conventional fungicides available to Hawaii coffee growers and spraying recommendations to help make the use of these fungicides safer and more effective. Following, a big portion of this presentation will be devoted to an example of monthly CLR management recommendations for organic coffee farmers in Hawaii. These recommendations can also be used by conventional farmers using preventative fungicides only. And lastly, a summary will be provided of the important points to drive home, and where producers can find additional resources on coffee and coffee leaf rust.
