His reign was marked by political instability and the rising threat of Saladin, the Muslim leader seeking to reclaim Jerusalem. Baldwin achieved a significant victory against Saladin at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, showcasing his leadership and military strategy. Although his health steadily declined, he worked to preserve the kingdom through diplomatic efforts and careful succession planning.
