Wood Engraving from Sketch to Print : Holy Carp!

This video shows my entire process of creating a wood engraving from the initial sketch to the finished print.

The ¼ round of end-grain maple wood I use came from The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Hamilton teamed up with The Wood Engravers Network, an organization of which I’m a member. They sent the wood blocks to several WEN members as a part of a project called, “Seize The Carp”. WEN editor Tony Drehfal organized this long-term collaboration with Hamilton in the spirit of carpe diem – seize the day – for wood engravers.

The terms were simple: We can engrave our blocks in any style we wish, but the theme must be a carp fish. Once engraved, we can print an edition for ourselves to have or sell, and then we mail the block back to Hamilton to be included in their permanent collection. Anyone taking a workshop at Hamilton can choose one of our carp blocks to lock in with their type and make posters, cards and broadsides. I’m so happy to have been a part of this cool project!
