Hiking Brooks Lake, Popolopen Gorge and the Torne. Hike will begin & end at Fort Montgomery. Staying on trail 1777-1779 only, hike is approx 4.5 miles. Going around Brooks Lake will add about 2 more miles. When you cross the bridge over Popolopen be careful to catch the correct trail or you could easily end up on the highway instead of on your way back to Fort Montgomery. Climb to the top of the Torne is slightly steep and will require some effort. Excellent view from the top, despite the ever present highway sound and the obnoxious noise created by indifferent, dickless, tough-guy wanna-a-be's farting their loud pipe bikes up and down the road trying to fell like men. This hike was also punctuated by the sound of the 2013 brood of cicada. It is amazing how much sounds such little bugs can make. This hike is a few minutes south of the West Point Military academy. Trail is reasonably well marked and maintained. Do not attempt to cross the highway to return to Fort Montgomery, a path passes beneath the bridge and takes you more safely to your starting point. This hike is less than 2 hours drive from New York City
