On paper, Coming From America had all the makings of a reality series we’d love on Ubiquitous Blacks—Black/African Diaspora families traveling, connecting, and showcasing our people in new and dynamic ways. But unfortunately, the series misses the mark.

In this episode, TeaRon and Tiera Janee break down what went wrong with this 6-episode reality show and discuss how it could have been better. Coming From America, now streaming on MAX, follows four families as they “move to Africa,” though many are clearly just visiting. The Kellys head to Ghana, hoping to break into Accra’s comedy scene. The Davises, led by a single mother who can’t stop mentioning her obscure Emmy, dream of bringing her holistic healing to Ghana—while constantly searching for her “African King.” The Smileys stand out as the only family genuinely moving to Zambia. And finally, Tony and Ayo, YouTube personalities behind Expat Life Ghana, use the show as a bit of a promo for their tourism company.

From stereotypes to cringe-worthy moments and an anti-climactic finale, this series leaves a lot to be desired. Have you seen it? Did it make you want to move to Africa? Tune in as we dissect this attempt at African repatriation and share our thoughts on how it could improve.
