DECLINING POPULATION
Japan's population is shrinking! Recent data shows the country's population dropped by almost a million people last year, the biggest annual drop on record. So why is this happening exactly? Well basically, people are having less babies these days, which is why over the last couple of decades, particularly in wealthier countries like Japan, depopulation has already started happening. See, new government data from Japan shows that country's national population fell by around 908,000 in 2024, bringing the total population to around 121 million. Making it the 16th year in a row that number has gone down. And the reason it keeps going down is because there are more people dying than there are being born each year, leaving Japan with an aging population and not enough children to replace them. Experts say if this keeps going, Japan's population could fall to 87 million by 2070, and with less people being born, that could put a lot strain on the economy and the workforce. So why is the number of birth rates in Japan going down? Well, things like cost of living, pressure to work, and changing lifestyle choices are just a few reasons. The Japanese government is trying to turn this around, with things like improved childcare support, efforts to improve work-life balance, and some experts say it might even be a good idea for Japan to welcome more foreigners to live there.
ISRAEL ANNOUNCEMENT
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel now intends to take full control of Gaza. Mr Netanyahu said Israel would then eventually hand over Gaza to Arab forces to govern. The Israeli military says it has operational control of 75 per cent of Gaza, and the news of war escalating has shocked people living there. The Australian government has spoken out against the announcement, and says it'll make the situation worse for people living in Gaza.
MATH HOOPS
Let's meet Oscar from Adelaide, who's just won a big math competition in New York, thanks to some practice from his classmates. Ten-year-old Oscar has just become the first Aussie to win the NBA Math Hoops Global Championship! He went up against 24 other teams with his teammate Kingston! And at the end of the three day competition, they walked away with the glass trophy. He first started playing NBA Math Hoops in math class. How the game works is the students first pick players for a team, just like they do in the NBA Drafts! Then they have to solve maths problems to take basketball shots, and if they get them right, they score points, and the team with the most points wins! These guys say the game has actually made math a bit more fun, and hope other kids will take up the game too!
GARMA YOUTH
Finally today, we're heading up to Gumatj country in North East Arnhem land, where young first nations people have been working on a bark painting, with a special message for the prime minister. Here in North East Arnhem land, Sienna and Savanah are carrying on an important tradition. They're painting diamonds on a big piece of bark using a special paintbrush made from Sienna's hair. Also on the bark are a whole bunch of thumbprints, from young First Nations people who were at this year's Garma festival. They want to send a message to Australia's decision-makers in Canberra, calling for things like more on-country learning and better school environments. The bark painting will be given to the prime minister later this month, who will then be asked to commit to the statement by stamping his fingerprint on it too. Then, after a short stay in Canberra, the bark painting will continue on a journey, visiting communities all around Australia.
