Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said crime reduction remains a top priority as the department looks ahead to 2026.

“We can talk about a lot of things, but at the end of the day, people want to know what we’re doing about crime,” McMahill said.

Under his leadership, LVMPD reports decreases in most major crime categories this year compared with 2024, including murders, robberies, burglaries and vehicle thefts.

“These are going to be historic low numbers we haven’t seen, not in my 35 years,” McMahill said.

Those reductions rank among the department’s top successes of the year. McMahill also credited community policing efforts and a decline in officer-involved shootings. Police recorded 17 shootings in 2024. This year, the department has reported seven, with two occurring this week. The most recent happened just after 1 a.m. Friday west of the Las Vegas Strip during a traffic stop.
