The problem with misting Orchids + Small experiment

Since we talked about increasing humidity for Orchids, some of you asked me what I think about misting and why I didn't mention this technique. So today we will talk only about misting!

The problem with misting is that if water pools in the crowns, new growths and leaf joints it can cause rotting. This is no secret, it's also not a rare occurrence and particularly for potted orchids in a non super ventilated and warm place, it will happen, just give it time.

Another problem, though more theoretical, is the time stomatas are open after misting. if water evaporates too fast from the surface of the leaf the orchid can potentially lose more water than absorb.

Here's a little experiment. Starting by understanding why water droplets form https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface... and taking into account that fluids with less surface tension evaporate faster, let's alter the water we use for misting or showering orchids to remove dust.

I misted a leaf with plain water and one with water containing a drop or two of dish detergent (which breaks surface tension). The result was.. the leaf with soapy water evaporated completely, while the other leaf almost at all! Now misting with soapy water every day cannot be a good idea.. I guess. This is more to do with dust cleaning, which is not performed daily.
