Suji Yan - Entering the Network States:The Revolution and Future of Decentralized Social | EDCON2023

Suji Yan, Founder of Mask Network, takes the stage at #EDCON2023 and shares his insights into the network states and the revolution & future of decentralized social. Suji introduces himself and Mask Network, saying that the idea of decentralized social network dates back to 1996 when the declaration of the independence of cyberspace was thrived by John Perry Barlow. He shares several takeaways from Barlow’s declaration, saying that we’re now in the digital feudalism in that the Internet giants take data and profits.

Suji says the first stage of cyberspace colonialism (Web1) has passed and we are now at the end of the 2nd stage (Web2) with all the Internet giants fighting with each other, and we’re now at the beginning of the 3rd stage (Web3) where the resistance against comprador companies comes from the network states and people and new organizations want to reclaim digital sovereignty. Suji goes on to say that we need a new power structure and by Balaji’s definition, the new source of power comes from cryptography, which is something that is not to be broken by nation states or supercomputers. He maintains that Web3 defines vital production relations of the network state.
