The story of Hairspray was first introduced by filmmaker John Waters in 1988. In 2002 it was created into a Broadway musical and ran for over 2,500 performances. In 2003 it won eight Tony Awards, it has had national tours, and was turned into a musical film in 2007. The reason that Hairspray has become such a profound, award-winning show isn’t just because of the music and dancing. This show shares themes that are still prevalent in today’s society.
