The Oltrarno, also known as "di là d’Arno" (the other side of the Arno), is the distinct portion of Florence located across the Arno River from the main historic center. Due to the rapid ascent of hills beyond its southern banks, this area is geographically smaller than the main city center. It is widely considered the most authentic and artistic area of the historic center, having best preserved the romanticism of old Florence. Travelers often choose Oltrarno because it is significantly less intensely touristy and quieter than the Duomo area, providing a more "real" feel with local shops where residents buy necessities and a higher likelihood of hearing Italian spoken. The district is historically famous for its many artisan workshops and studios. Although it is less dense with attractions than the historic core, Oltrarno holds major sights such as the Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli Gardens, and provides superior panoramic views from Piazzale Michelangelo and the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte.
The Oltrarno is subdivided into three adjacent neighborhoods: Santo Spirito, San Niccolò, and San Frediano. Santo Spirito is often lauded for achieving the perfect balance of art, handicraft shops, major attractions, restaurants, and lively nightlife, centered around the enjoyable Piazza Santo Spirito. San Niccolò is regarded as the city’s creative district, recognized for being slightly more upscale with numerous art galleries, hip shops, boutiques, and the unique feature of containing the only visible sections of the original medieval city walls. Finally, San Frediano, on the western side, rapidly becomes more residential and local, appealing to gourmands with its old-style trattorias and osterias that serve simple, traditional dishes.
