The Cryers arrived in New York City from Meridian Mississippi in the late 1970s shortly before their younger hometown friend Steve Forbert.  Despite making music that was nothing like their more punk contemporaries, they found an audience at CBGB and a friend in owner Hilly Krystal who became their manager.  After seeing them on stage at that legendary venue, Steve Katz (Blood Sweat & Tears / Mercury A&R) took them into the studio and produced the demos that would eventually be re-recorded by Michael Sherman and become the band’s first album, The Cryers.  Members included Lowry Hamner, who wrote and sang 90% of the songs, Lee Townsend, who wrote and sang the other 10%, Tommy Ethridge (brother of Flying Burrito Brother, Chris Ethridge) and Clay Barnes, who went on to play guitar and tour with Steve Forbert.  Billy Mintz played drums.

Graham Parker sang about "Mercury Poisoning" and if any band ever suffered from that, The Cryers certainly did. Though, unlike many other great, but lesser-known bands of that era, The Cryers actually got to make a 2nd record.  But, not without a new drummer, a marquee change that put the main singer/songwriter over the band's name and the loss of Lee Townsend and his songwriting and sax contributions.
