Release of untreated or partially treated sewage into storm water drains (SWDs) is polluting water bodies like Bellandur and Varthur lakes. In order to check this, the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) notice mandates the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to have a mechanism in place to check this contamination. In this context, the KSPCB is planning to make installation of sensors for STPs mandatory.

KSPCB’s notice mandating installation of sensors for Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) had created quite an uproar. Installation of sensors is likely to cost anywhere between Rs 4-10 lakh, and not all apartments in Bengaluru can afford this, especially given the negative impact of COVID. However, KSPCB has made it clear that it’s not just apartments in Bengaluru but commercial complexes, IT firms & BWSSB must also install sensors.
