The district on the south bank of the Main does not, as one might think, take its name from a beautiful, white swan. Rather, Schwanheim became known as “Sweinheim” around 880 AD. The Franconian apostle Kilian is said to have preached here 200 years earlier. The small town was initially a village of farmers, then of industrial workers - but during this time it was also always a place of artists. Her favorite motifs: the centuries-old oak trees in the Schwanheim Forest and the 58.5 hectare Schwanheim Dune, part of a dune landscape that was extensive in the Middle Ages. The district - which also includes the Goldstein settlement - has also retained its rustic corners: these are the focus of attention at the Schrimpegasse Festival, together with the alley of the same name.

Schwanheim, in Nassau, was not connected to the Hessian state railway in the 19th century, but that wasn't a bad thing for the town: in 1889 it got a steam tram instead. Its terminus has served as the Frankfurt am Main Transport Museum since 1984, where, among other things, the world's oldest preserved electric tram railcar can be seen. Also particularly interesting: the Schwanheimer Wiese, the largest in Frankfurt. The Urmain flowed here 10,000 years ago. By the way: the historic sewage treatment tank system from 1887 on the site of the Niederrad sewage treatment plant was once the most modern in Europe. Until the border was changed in 2018, it actually belonged to Schwanheim.
