Jamaica Port Royal was founded in 1518. Once the largest city in the Caribbean and called the "richest and wickedest city in the world”, is today a small but resilient fishing village.
Port Royal was home to pirates and notorious for its gaudy displays of wealth and loose morals. Pirates from around the world congregated at Port Royal, coming from waters as far away as Madagascar.
It was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami on 7 June 1692. After that its commercial role was steadily taken over by the nearby town of Kingston. Today Port Royal remains one of the most important underwater archaeological sites in the western hemisphere.
Severe hurricanes have regularly damaged Port Royal. Another severe earthquake occurred in 1907.
