Vijaya has played the role of Sellakannu in the film as a fishmonger. R. Muthuraman has played the role of Madhu in this film. She is working as a maid in the lower caste Chellakkanu Varadachari house.Varadachari's son Madhu returns home after completing his studies abroad. When he arrives, the maid falls in love with Sellakannu. Sellakannu also likes Madhu. Sellakannu hesitates as Madhu is an upper caste. village peoples seeing that the two are in privacy.So,the villagers gather the panchayat and order Madhu to marry Sellakannu.Madhu asks his mother Alamu for permission. Alamu is a Iyengar women so she refuses to accept Chellamma. because she is a lower caste girl. But Madhu decides to marry Chellamma. Madhu disobeys her parents and gets married. So they send Madhu away from home.Madhu and Chellamma start their married life.Madhu has studied in abroad.So, he taught the lower castes how to work to change their lives and worked with them. Then Madhu got measles. As there was no medicine for measles, Chellamma performed Angapredesam in the temple. When Alamu saw that Chellamma was pragent and live without food, she was fully with love for her son Madhu. Seeing this, his heart accept her as daughter-in-law and feed her. Madhu also got cured as per the praying of Chellamma.
