NARROWBOAT | Are the Rochdale Nine Locks really the worst?

This time we leave Castlefields junction in Manchester and head on up the notorious Rochdale Nine locks. We endure wet weather, slippery surfaces, and climbing lock gates to operated clunky paddles, but are the locks really as bad as their reputation?

Over the years we've heard horror stories from boaters who had witnessed prostitution in full view, drug taking and violence around these locks . We wandered what would be our fate as we progressed through what are supposed to be the worst locks on the network but what did we find out? Were they really that bad?
