If any other actor would've played J.R. Ewing there wouldn't have been the slightest bit of sympathy for the character, but thankfully Larry Hagman's personality shined through and provided a necessary softness. His portrayal made for one of the most complex characters to ever grace the TV screen, you couldn't help but curse and cheer for him all at the same time.
