02/25/2021 - Walter Massey, J'Tia Hart, Raychelle Burks, Brian Nord

Dr. Walter E. Massey has been a trailblazer throughout his career, opening doors for African Americans in the fields of science, business, and education. Included in his list of "firsts" is serving as Argonne's first African American Laboratory Director.

Today, in the nation's scientific community, African American scientists enjoy opportunities to engage in scientific discovery that impacts the world. Nonetheless, they remain underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering.

During this Argonne OutLoud Lecture, Dr. Massey talked about the work he has done throughout his career to increase diversity in the sciences.

During the panel discussion that followed, Dr. Massey was joined by Argonne nuclear engineer J'Tia Hart, American University chemist Raychelle Burks, and FermiLab physicist Brian Nord who shared their insights regarding strategies that academic and science-based institutions should take to strengthen the science community for the next generation of African Americans.

Finally, during the presentation, Argonne director Paul Kearns announced the creation of the Walter Massey Fellowship aimed at increasing the laboratory's diversity.
