Optimizing Design and Operations of Concentrated Solar Power Plants

Abstract: Concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, especially those using a central receiver configuration, present a promising path towards utility-scale renewable energy. The power tower, or central receiver, configuration can achieve higher operating temperatures than other forms of CSP, and, like all forms of CSP, naturally pairs with comparatively inexpensive thermal energy storage. Strategic decision making entails a complex array of intertwined toolboxes, and presents an implicit mathematical program. To support operational decisions, we develop two types of explicit integer programming models. In all cases, we discuss the benefits of optimization over rules of thumb.

Bio: Alexandra M. Newman is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines. She holds a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Chicago, an M.S. in Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the Colorado School of Mines, she held the appointment of Research Assistant Professor in the Operations Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate School. Professor Newman's primary research interests lie in optimization modeling, particularly as it is applied to logistics, the energy and mining industries, and military operations. She is serving as associate editor of INFORMS Journal on Optimization and INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics (formerly Interfaces), has won the INFORMS Prize for Teaching of OR/MS Practice, and is an active member of INFORMS.
