This late 1950s or early 1960s film documentary provides an overview of conditions in the subcontinent of India during that time. An oxcart is overloaded with sheaves. Cargo is unloaded onto an airplane and from a boxcar. A factory worker stands at a machine weaving cotton into cloth. Lipton dust tea is packaged into wooden crates. Jute fiber is processed. A boy pulls tanned leather from an oven. Large tanks hold fertilizer. A large ship is docked (:10-1:06). A cow and goat stand outside a mud house. A group of people harvest sheaves. An elephant walks through the jungle. Arid desert land is shown. Animals drink from a pond. People pass each other on a narrow dirt street in a village. The contrasting modern apartment buildings are shown (1:07-1:57). A map shows the Union of India (1947-1950) and the parts belonging to Pakistan, which was created in 1947 as the two-nation theory separating Hindus and Muslims. The Northern Highlights, North India Plain, Indus Valley, and Deccan Plateau regions are shown. Footage is shown of the North India Plain where the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers join. Oxen move through rice fields. Sugar cane blows in the wind. Workers hoe ground crops (1:58-3:13). A man and his son use oxen and a wooden plow to work up their small plot of land. Another farm sits on a John Deere tractor. The father and son hand-sow their rice paddy (3:14-4:22). The mother and daughter carry stocks of sugarcane to a mill. An ox turns a roller machine, crushing the stalk. The mother catches the juice that comes out. The mother carries a large basket on her head at the marketplace. Their home is shown as the mother and daughter begin the cooking process. They knead the dough and clean rice. The father and son head home at sunset, carrying their tools (4:23-5:43). The Pakistani portion of the North India Plain is known for its tall jute plants. Men cut the jute plants, tie them into bundles, and place them in a stream to soak, which makes it easier to remove the outer bark. At the mill in Calcutta, workers spin the jute, which is then woven into burlap cloth (5:44-6:50). The Brahmaputra Valley tea crops are shown from above. Workers carry baskets into the tea fields. Young tea leaves are picked by hand (6:51-7:32). Indus Valley farmers throw wheat into the air to separate the grain from the chaff. A shepherd stands with his flock (7:33-8:15). The Deccan Plateau has large dams. Farmers work in a millet and cotton field. Cotton is picked by hand. A large ball of crude cotton is loaded by four men onto an ox-driven cart. The cotton is collected in Delhi for train transport. The ships at Bombay are shown (8:16-9:50). Shown are a Muslim mosque in Pakistan, and government buildings in Karachi and in New Delhi. New apartment housing, schools, and hospitals are shown. Flames shoot up during steelmaking. Factory workers assemble radios. Previous video is shown (9:51-12:20).
