In part 6 of our Honda CRF450R engine rebuild series, we’re installing the cylinder head and adjusting the valves. If you want to go back and see the CRF450 engine rebuild from the beginning, start here:    • Honda CRF450 Engine Rebuild

With the piston and cylinder assembled on our CRF450R engine, our attention turns to the cylinder head. We’re working with lots of small pieces here, and the first rule is not to let them fall down into the engine. John will show you how to use magnets and some grease to prevent that from happening along the way.

We’ll start by removing components from the old head that we’re planning to reuse, and then we’ll get to work on our new head. We’ll show you how to use Prussian blue to check the seals on your valves, and then we’ll start getting those valves installed. After we get the springs in place, we’ll install the cylinder head on our CRF450. This will get us to the point where we can add the cam and measure the valve clearances. These components are new, and they should fit nicely, but we’ll still check.

After that, we’ll get the timing chain and sprocket attached and then close the engine up by bolting the head cover into place.
