A program to combat childhood obesity and encourage wellness is being made available free to Berks County school districts. An overview of the program will be presented to Berks school district educators at a luncheon on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be held in the South Lounge of Albright's Campus Center.

This program, called "A Wellness Adventure," is a holistic, educational and interactive program for children and their caregivers developed as a partnership by Albright College, The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, and Penn State Berks. The project was funded by the Community General Hospital Health Care Fund of Berks County Community Foundation.

This model pre-k through 5th grade elementary program incorporates three components: nutrition, emotional well-being and physical activity. Each component was designed and presented by specialists from the Reading Hospital nutrition department, Penn State kinesiology department and Albright College psychology department. The school kits include standards-based lesson plans, materials and resources, recipes and parent participation hand-outs, to assist school districts who choose to incorporate elements of the program into their curriculum.

The program was piloted for three years at the Albright College Schumo Center for Fitness and Well-Being, with the goal of providing the program free to school districts for broad implementation.
