Annual 'Pihuumagan Paganakan NC Mogunting'.

The Paganakan NC Mogunting Batinjam celebrated their 4th year Kaamatan celebration since its inaugural in 2016. There was a steady increase in attendance since then. This year's celebration has attracted more than 1000 Paganakan NC Mogunting who turned up to participate at the Sabah Cultural Centre, Penampang with many more from overseas who were unable to attend due to work commitment.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF KAMPUNG HUBAH AND ITS FOUNDER, NC MOGUNTING BATINJAM.

Kampung Hubah is located about one mile from the Donggongon Township along the Putatan/Moyog river, which has about 500 population, and covers an area of approximately 40 acres. Nonetheless, its eminence is not diminished because Kampung Hubah was established by the late Native Chief Mogunting Batinjam or known as N.C. Mogunting. It is also his youngest son, the late former Penampang District Chief Datuk Jintol Mogunting’s family and the founder’s third, fourth, fifth and sixth generations, are still residing.

In 1896 N.C. Mogunting Batinjam “migrated” from Kampung Terawi to Kampung Hubah which was overgrown with the “hubah” trees. The “hubah” tree, whose leaves are similar to the “nibong”, was known in those days as a delicacy. However, one cannot find a single “hubah” tree in Kampung Hubah nowdays despite the fact that the said Kampung derived its name. Nevertheless, you can still find few or rare “hubah” tree along the road, which was planted by the late Datuk Jintol Mogunting.

In those days, moving from one kampong to another was akin to migration. The move was prompted by the shifting of the District’s administrative centre from Putatan to its present location in Penampang. With the shift of administrative centre, it then became known as the Penampang District. It is believed that N.C. Mogunting Batinjam was the first to establishe a permanent residence at Kampung Hubah and hence he was accredited to as the Founder of Kampung Hubah.

In recognition to the late NC Mogunting Batinjam, the feeder road from Hubah/Babah-Bunduon/Mahandoi/Tulangis off Jalan Penampang/Papar, was named after him as “Jalan N.C. Mogunting” in the 1980s. by the Penampang District Council. This was to honour the founder of Kampung Hubah the late N.C. Mogunting Batinjam and his services to the then British Crown Colony Government as well as one of the pioneer “Ketua Kampung”” in Penampang District.

We used to have a direct access to Jalan NC Mogunting from Penampang/Papar Road before it was upgraded to a 4-lane highway, but now commuters have to make a U-Turn at Kampung Nambazan (about 2 Kilometers away) before reaching the junction at NC Mogunting Road. This road was finally sealed in the 1990s! and was renamed as Jalan Dambai Kampung Babah-Bunduon/Mahandoi/Tulangis Road.

As a mark of respect to the founder of Kampung Hubah and in recognition of his services to the country before independence, the Jalan Dambai Kampung Babah-Bunduon/Mahandoi/Tulangis Road was reinstated to its former name as “Jalan NC Mogunting” upon an appeal letter made by the great-great grandchildren of N.C. Mogunting Batinjam, to the Chairman of Penampang District Council in 2006. Hence, the road signage was changed accordingly to its original name and was reinstated to its present position on 27th February 2010.
