In this talk, originally given for the MBT Zen Shin Sangha on 8.7.22, I speak about finding a perspective shift needed to access different types of expression. In my case, I learned I can understand visual arts that involve playing in negative space and taking away what is not the final outcome - such as carving and sculpting with wood and stone.

We all share reflections and check in with each other after the sit and dharma talk on Sundays, and folks shared such beautiful insight and wisdom during the discussion after this. One community member shared that after becoming repeatedly frustrated with painting and drawing, completing complicated puzzles actually soothed the part of them that wanted to create a picture in the same way, and without the frustration. Many shared similar types of stories and discoveries, and for a moment we all laughed together. Retelling stories of relief felt when finding our ways to access artistic expression allowed us to communally embody that joy, curiosity and ease together. I am so grateful for you all.
