The Shrieking Pits of Aylmerton & Northrepps, two female apparitions are believed to haunt the sites

The Aylmerton Cross monument marks the spot where an ancient cross was situated once used by pilgrims on route to Walsingham Shrine. Visible in the fields behind are numerous shallow pits. Known locally as “Shrieking Pits” because of their reputation of being haunted by a ghostly lady dressed in white crying out for her lost baby. Her husband allegedly killed the baby thinking he wasn’t the father and buried the infant in one of the pits before going back to murder his wife. The lady spirit has allegedly been witnessed on multiple occasions as she frantically searches the pits crying out for her lost baby. Local folklore suggests a secret tunnel leads from Aylmerton Cross to the 13th century ruins of Beeston Regis Priory and within this tunnel a “golden calf” is hidden. Many religious relics and priceless artefacts were hidden from Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries period to prevent them being stolen and monetised. Beeston Regis Priory was dissolved in 1536 and is reportedly haunted by a hooded grey spirit thought to be an over protective monk. Nearby to the “Shrieking Pits” of Aylmerton is another water filled hollow at Northrepps. Here too is supposedly haunted by a young lady. Esmeralda had a secret relationship with a married farmer but when the local clergy learned of this affair they were warned to end it immediately and the farmer agreed. Esmeralda was heartbroken and plunged herself into the Northrepps pit. She quickly regretted her decision and tried desperately to escape but her calls for help were unheard. It is rumoured her screams can still be heard on the anniversary of her death on the evening of 24th February each year.
