The Belle of Belfast City (Tell Me Ma) | Lisa Dawson (Official Audio)

This was the first song I ever knew that mentioned a place in Northern Ireland, and I remember being pretty excited about it!
This is why I wanted to do this project, of exploring traditional music around Northern Ireland, as I think we can all be proud of this wee country, and it’s fantastic heritage and culture!

“Tell Me Ma” (known colloquially as "The Belle of Belfast City”) is a children’s game song. The chorus normally includes Belfast, but it is adapted to other cities, depending on where you’re from! I recently shared a clip of this song, and I had people from all over telling me how they love this song! Scotland, Dublin, Liverpool and even Nova Scotia!
Famously covered by Sham Rock, and many others like Van Morrison, The Dubliners and Sinead O’Connor.

As this is a children’s song, I didn’t want to take it too seriously! So I had a bit of fun with the arrangement, this video is also just a bit of silly fun
