Passing the Time of God’s Discipline Through Repentance and Return
There are times in life when fear fills the heart and the future feels uncertain. People sense that difficult days are ahead—days of correction, loss, or suffering. In the Ethiopian Orthodox understanding, such times are not meant to destroy us, but to awaken us. What many call the punishment of God is often the discipline of a loving Father, meant to bring His children back to life, truth, and salvation.
The Church teaches that no one escapes God’s justice, but no one is also beyond His mercy. The way to pass through frightening times is not by running away, hiding, or blaming others. It is by returning to God with repentance. When a person turns back to God sincerely, judgment becomes mercy, and correction becomes healing.
Confession is central in this return. To confess sins is not to shame oneself, but to free the soul. Sin weighs heavily on the heart and separates a person from peace. Through confession, the soul is washed, pride is broken, and humility is restored. A clean heart is a protected heart. The Church teaches that God listens quickly to those who come to Him with honesty and tears.
Purity of life is also essential. This means turning away from known sins, forgiving others, controlling the tongue, and living with humility. God does not demand perfection, but sincerity. When a person struggles honestly to change, God strengthens them. The scary times ahead lose their power over a soul that walks closely with God.
Prayer and fasting are powerful shields. They train the soul to depend on God rather than the world. The saints teach that prayer invites God’s presence, and where God is present, fear cannot rule. Fasting humbles the body and sharpens the spirit, preparing the believer to endure trials with faith.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church also reminds us that obedience brings protection. Listening to God’s commandments, honoring the Church, and walking in love toward others keeps a person under God’s covering. Many punishments are avoided not by fear, but by obedience.
In the end, the safest place during frightening times is not escape, wealth, or power—it is repentance and closeness to God. Those who return to Him with a broken heart will find mercy instead of judgment, peace instead of fear, and hope instead of despair.
