In the fading days of the Old West, ex-outlaw Handsome Harry Holland is released from prison as an aging, barely recognizable man. He arrives in Bell City, where the locals, mostly children, are in awe of his legendary gun-handling skills. Seeking a drink at the local saloon, Holland stumbles into a poker game with Reggie Bell, the troublemaking son of the town boss, who is cheating as usual. When Holland wins all of Reggie's money, the young man hands him an IOU, but when Harry tries to cash it at the bank, the corrupt sheriff, at Reggie's bidding, orders him out of town. Defiant, Holland forces the teller to honor the IOU, sparking a violent confrontation that leaves the sheriff dead. Wounded and trapped in a hotel, Holland faces a standoff with the town's deputies, while the mayor sends for a former lawman, Sam Starret, to handle the threat—though Starret, past his prime and living in Mexico, may not be up to the task.
