Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) is a well-known public research university in Multan, Pakistan, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields of study, including agriculture, natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, arts, and humanities.
Forest: a complex ecosystem consisting mainly of trees that buffer the earth and support a myriad of life forms.
Forestry: The science and practice of establishing, managing, using, and conserving forests, trees and associated resources in a sustainable manner to meet desired goals, needs, and values.
Background and Importance
Forests cover about 30% of the world earth’s land surface
In Pakistan, 4.5% area is under forests
Unfortunately, deforestation rose to an alarming level, around 3.8 million hectares of mature forests lost annually (WRI-2021)
Population growth, modernization and development resulted in high rates of deforestation
Deforestation affects environment, biological, social and economic side of the society
In Spite of all this, Forests serves the society by following ways;
Forests
Provide us a breath of Fresh air (single tree produce oxygen enough for 2-10 persons)
Keep the earth cool by reducing global warming
Habitat for humans, for animals (25% of world population directly depends on forests)
Helpful in maintaining climate at regional as well as at global level
Prevent soil erosion and control floods
Provides Timber, fuelwood, food, fruit, medicine, gums and many more
Important for promoting ecotourism
