"All in the Family" first aired on television in January 1971, more than 50 years ago. The show was supposed to air on ABC but was instead picked by the CBS television network where it remained until April 1979. Over its successful run, which lasted nearly one decade, the sitcom covered many unsuitable topics and focused on the depiction of issues such as homosexuality, racism, rape, religion, impotence, and antisemitism among many others. Instantly after its premiere, the show went on to top the Nielsen ratings for five consecutive years, from 1971 to 1976. After its conclusion, it also continued with "Archie Bunker's Place", a spin-off series that lasted for four years through 1983.
