The painting by Russian artist Ilya Repin, entitled The Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan. The story depicted in the painting unfolds in the 17th century. At that time, the mighty Ottoman Empire launched fierce assaults upon the Cossack stronghold of Zaporozhye, yet ultimately failed to subdue the Zaporozhian Cossacks. The Ottoman Sultan was greatly astonished by the Cossack warriors' extraordinary courage and formidable fighting prowess. He therefore resolved to persuade these warriors to surrender. Consequently, the Cossack leader Serko, together with a group of ‘elders’ from among the Zaporozhian Cossacks, carefully deliberated over the wording of their reply, delivering a sharp rebuke to the Turks.
