The first few moons in ThunderClan had not affected the friendship that Smudge and Firepaw had, but over time Firepaw began to spend more time with Graypaw and Ravenpaw and it was then that the relationship between the two of them began to deteriorate, reaching a point where they barely interacted and at times felt that the atmosphere became too uncomfortable.
Smudge tried to maintain his friendship with Firepaw, but after a couple of tries he gave up. Then jealousy and resentment began. Smudge thought that Fire had stopped hanging out with him because they had both been kittypets in the past and he was sure that to Firepaw he was just a part of that past (he wasn't so wrong). Now, in his eyes Firepaw was just another cat who judged him for his origins.
