Even though it wasn't uncommon for royal families in Europe to marry close relations until the last century (Queen Elizabeth II married her own third cousin), the Spanish Habsburgs did it in a way that was especially dangerous. During the 184 years they ruled Spain, from 1516 to 1700, nine of the eleven marriages that took place between them were between family members.

In fact, most current researchers agree that the famous "Habsburg jaw" deformity was caused by generations of inbreeding among the Spanish Habsburgs, which led to their downfall. Because of incest, the family's genetic line got worse and worse until Charles II, the last male heir, was physically unable to have children. This meant that the Habsburgs could no longer rule.
