Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about Beach Water Polo.
Beach Water Polo is a team sport that is played in open water off the beach.
The game shares a lot of similarities with Olympic Water Polo which is played in an indoor pool.
The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opponent.
Beach Water Polo is played on a course measuring 18m x 11m with goalposts on both sides.
It is played between two teams of four players each.
There is one goalkeeper in both teams.
Both the teams are required to pass the ball among their teammates and throw it into the opponent’s goal post to score a goal.
If the team consists of both girls and boys, there should be 2 girls and 2 boys on the field at all times
The match of beach water polo is played for a set duration of 20 to 30 minutes with each game lasting for around 6 minutes.
The game stays in continuous play which means there are no stoppages even after the goal is scored.
The first team that manages to score 5 goals wins that game and the first team to win 3 games wins the match.
If the match time expires before all the games officially end, the team ahead on the scorecard is declared as the winner.
In case of a tie, a penalty shootout of 3 shots per team decides the fate of that game.
