Artificial Intelligence (AI) and law intersect in various ways, shaping the legal landscape and presenting both opportunities and challenges. AI refers to the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence, inter alia, speech recognition, decision-making, problem-solving and learning from data. In the legal domain, AI technology has been utilised for tasks such as legal research, contract analysis, document review, predictive analytics, and even the development of chatbots for providing legal advice, helping students with their work and assignments.

In Zambia the use of AI was adopted in the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECTA) (Act No. 21 of 2009) and this act governs the legal recognition and regulation of electronic transactions, digital signatures, data messages, and related matters. Also the Data Protection Act (DPA) (Act No. 24 of 2019). The DPA establishes a framework for the protection of personal data and provides guidelines for its processing. It sets out the rights and obligations of data controllers and data subjects, including principles for lawful processing and security measures.
