Siliguri Corridor , popularly known as Chicken's neck , is a 17 km wide narrow stretch of land , located in West Bengal , which connects mainland India with north-east India. Due to its location in the middle of two foreign powers , it has always been the most vulnerable point in India' s physical map.

It is often claimed that China may anytime block this region & separate the northeast region from the rest of India. Is it really true ? Can China really do so ? If China has the capability to do it , why don't they do it ?

The answer to this question lies in what is known as China's Malacca dilemma. Malacca strait is a narrow stretch of water between indonesia & Malaysia. It is an important trade route in the middle of the Indian ocean. Almost 70 % of Chinese energy requirements depend on West Asia. Chinese oil travels through this channel before entering the south China sea. India, being in proximity to Malacca strait , has a strategic leverage vis a vis China. it can anytime block the Malacca strait in order to cut energy supply to China. China is well aware of this. So they never attempt any adventure to hurt India's chicken Neck.

However, China is recently searching for an alternative route to Malacca strait. For this purpose they are constructing a corridor via pakistan known as CPEC ( China Pakistan economic corridor). However experts say it is an unsustainable project due to the presence of lofty Himalayas in between the corridor.
