The Orne "creature" comes to life in 1995, when Peter Vicar (Reverend Bizarre) decides to pay his personal tribute to groups such as Van Der Graaf Generator, Black Widow, King Crimson, Genesis and Pink Floyd.
A 70s prog rock sound therefore, but revised in a darker version and melancholy with the addition of doom and folk elements.
The traveling companions are the remaining members of the mother band Reverend Bizarre, namely Albert
Witchfinder on vocals and Earl Of Void on drums, with the addition of some elements from the Finnish underground.
The project, after a series of demo-tapes, was temporarily shelved to then see the light again in 2006 with the full-length "The Conjuration By The Fire", released in Europe by the Italian label Black Widow Records.
Magical, dark and depressive themes take possession of every single track contained within "The Conjuration By The Fire".
The lyrics are mainly inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, as well as the monicker of the group which is inspired by the figure of Simon Orne, a character taken from "The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward".
If Reverend Bizarre's sound is characterized by heavy and suffocating atmospheres, Orne instead push towards more dreamy territories that make listening equal to a mental journey towards lost and timeless worlds.
Leading the slow procession is always Albert's voice: dark, dramatic and terribly evocative thanks to a warm and deep singing.
The journey begins with "In The Vault", an intro characterized by a short recitation by Patrick Walker (Warning), a real invocation that acts as a prelude to "A Beginning", a track that flows slowly and delicately on a carpet sound recreated by the light arpeggios of the guitars, stopping subsequently to leave room for sudden accelerations that slightly break that aura of surreal magic that will remain a constant throughout the entire tracklist.
The slow pulsation of Antti Fredriksson's bass introduces the following "Anton", a song that rests delicately on the obsessive riffs of Pekka Pitkälä and Peter Vicar's guitars that occasionally leave room for the excellent insertions of Jussi Lisko saxophone.
The next track sees another wind instrument stand out (always played by Lisko); it is in fact the magical sound of a flute that introduces the dreamy "Island Of Joy", endowed with a melodic, hypnotic and exciting refrain.
If the splendid "Frontline Dreams" shines in all its beauty made of nostalgic melodies in which the real protagonist is Albert's voice, more inspired and evocative than ever, the following "Opening By Watchtower" initially shows itself for its relaxed and at the same time disturbing atmospheres, to then let off steam later in a real dance on rhythms with a clear folk flavor.
The closure of the disc is entrusted to the very long "Lightouse"; it is here that all the instruments merge into one and give life to a succession of emotions that always remain between the melancholy and the dreamy.
Fascinating! There are no other adjectives to describe this first creature of the Orne.
The Finnish band has managed to compose a work that is based on clearly prog rock foundations, but in this case its original form is changed to give birth to an original hybrid between prog, doom and folk.
"The Conjuration By The Fire" is a journey that, despite its suffocating slowness, will prove to be pleasant even for those who are not so familiar with this type of atmosphere.
